Hi, I'm Robyn,
Since coming to Australia from South Africa in 2001 I have worked in community development and education in the Queensland Indigenous communities of Cherbourg and Palm Island.
For 15 years, I worked with Elders and community groups in the creation and management of the Ration Shed Museum, which has now become a must-see educational and tourist destination in South East Queensland.
As part of managing the Museum, I worked extensively with children, youth, young mums and Elders in the community. I initiated numerous workshops and various educational projects, many of which continue successfully to the present. With a focus on caring, healing and creating, these activities ranged from art and pottery workshops through to literacy, women circles and group storytelling.
I’ve also done many one-on-one jobs assisting with learning difficulties and over-coming social disadvantage, including teaching at Cherbourg State School and Murgon State High School, mentoring students struggling with main-stream education.
I now work as a carer, assisting those in need of care and support.
In my free time I am a creative artist and researcher, focusing on the social and environmental challenges our society faces at this time.
